Ludwig van Beethoven

"Eroica"

II. Marcia funebre. Adagio assai (16:13)
III. Scherzo. Allegro vivace - Trio (33:35)
IV. Finale. Allegro molto - Poco Andante - Presto (40:06)

Wilhelm Furtwängler, conducting
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Recorded on November 26/27, 1952
in the Grosser Saal, Musikverein, Vienna

I readily confess that, although there are many really good recordings of the Eroica to choose from, this has always been my favorite since I was a kid; every note and phrase is perfection, and the expressive feeling seems to me just as perfect. It feels, to me, like the epitome of Beethoven in performance. Last week we shared the amazing 1939 performance of this symphony with Toscanini, now we go to the other side of the Atlantic for the other great war era genius of Beethoven interpreters; Furtwängler.

Since 1922 there have been somewhere around 300 recordings available of the "Eroica". Still, out of those about a dozen or so emerge as particularly exceptional. At least two of those are by Furtwängler; a live performance with the Berlin Philharmonic, and the present studio recording, both from 1952.

Although Furtwängler is celebrated for his live recordings his work in the studio was no less important. The present recording is among his finest. Produced by Walter Legge, it represents a landmark, not only in music, but also in early high fidelity. No classical record collection could be complete without it.
